Bio of the artist
Ali TNANI is a visual artist born in 1982 in Tunisia. He currently lives and works between Paris and Tunis. He obtained his master's degree in 2007 at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis. He has participated in several artist residency programs, the last one at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Ali Tnani explores conceptual art and exploits several mediums including photography, drawing and installations.
Since 2007, he has been working on the idea of trace and place. The trace, conceived as a semiotic index or a remnant, an extension of his notion of "counterspaces" both visual and political. Places shed light on inherent contradictions and open a space for questioning hegemonic utopian narratives. El Marsa Gallery describes her work as follows "...These disruptive spaces expose the ghostly signs of history in contemporary life: what has been written is being written and will be rewritten in the future. Material and immaterial forms are visually reflected in her drawings where pigment and lead pencil residues seem to disappear into the surface of the paper...".
Ali Tnani has participated in many international exhibitions; his work has been shown at the Talmart Gallery, the Galerie Les Singuliers, the Galerie Sponte in Paris, as well as at the Musée du Montparnasse, the Centre Pablo Neruda in Nîmes, the Musée des Beaux Arts du Mons in Belgium. In 2017, the El Marsa Gallery devoted a solo exhibition to him ''Dans l'intervalle entre monument et document'' in Tunis and in 2018, the exhibition 'Unknown program' in Dubai.
