Writing workshop

The Kamel Lazaar Foundation is pleased to invite you to a week-long writing workshop with Palestinian writer Karim Kattan, from December 2nd to December 6th at B7L9 in Tunis.

When?

December 2-6, 2023

Languages:

Arabic - French - English

Who is it for?

This workshop is aimed at artists, students, and aspiring writers, particularly master's level students (or equivalent). Applicants must submit a letter of motivation and a short sample of their writing. Since the number of spots is limited, a selection will be made based on the evaluation of complete applications received.

Workshop objectives?

The main objective is to develop texts inspired by familiar environments and to take the imaginative worlds of each individual seriously as literary material.

We invite participants to reinvent a place of their choice and write a piece of fiction (prose or poetry) set in a transit location in Tunis, whether it be a stop on the TGM, a louage station, a bus terminal, taxis, an airport, or any other place. This workshop draws inspiration from science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy to nurture the creativity and imagination of the participants.

What to expect in this workshop?

Participants will be encouraged to write fiction through a series of exercises, readings, and writing sessions, drawing inspiration from the history, mythology, and folklore of their environment. Activities will mainly take place at B7L9, with independent visits to selected areas of the city, providing an opportunity to observe, collect notes, and respond to prompts through targeted exercises.

What will be the outcome?

At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant will produce individual texts with the aim of publishing them in an informal printed edition. Selected participants are required to attend all sessions and will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the workshop.

Schedule?

On Saturday and Sunday, December 2nd and 3rd, the workshop will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by site visits in the afternoons.

On Monday and Tuesday, December 4th and 5th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

On Wednesday, December 6th at 6:00 PM: Workshop closing and a public reading session.
